Chapter Nineteen

After weeks of studying the scriptures that Reverend Nixon had provided her and reflecting on the therapy meetings, Julia softened her stance regarding her treatment of Erin, and a semblance of peace reigned in the Freeman household. Julia planned to leave work early that day so she could accompany Erin and Brandon to Erin’s doctor appointment that afternoon. It was about 6:45 A.M., and Julia had another fifteen minutes to sleep. She inched closer to Douglas’s side of the bed to snuggle close to her husband’s warm body, and instead Julia found an empty space.

She sat up on her elbows after Douglas burst frantically into the room.

“Jules,” he shouted, rushing over to the bed. “Get up. Something is terribly wrong with Erin.”

Julia immediately sat upright in the bed, “What do you mean? What’s wrong with her?” Her heart rate soared inside her chest.

“I don’t have time to explain now. Please get up. We need to get her to the hospital as soon as possible.” Douglas went to the walk-in closet and began shedding his robe and pajamas, and quickly put on his clothes.

Julia lay in the bed stunned. She swung one leg out of the bed and then the other. She pushed her hair off her face. “Should we call an ambulance? Maybe I should go check on her,” she said timidly as her hands began to shake. Julia clasped them together.

“Just get dressed. Brandon is with her now, trying to calm her down. I don’t think we have time to wait for an ambulance to arrive. Erin is having severe pains, and from the way Brandon described them, it doesn’t sound like normal labor pains. As soon as you get dressed, we’re going to the hospital,” Douglas replied as Julia walked to the closet, pulling off her nightgown and then getting dressed.

Fifteen minutes later the couple rushed to the basement and found Erin fully clad, lying listlessly on the untidy peach sheets on the full-sized bed. Brandon looked up as his parents walked into the bedroom. His face was a mask of fright while Erin’s face was scrunched up from pain.

Julia bent over her moaning daughter-in-law. “Where does it hurt?”

“My stomach feels like a belt is tied too tightly around it. I’ve been having pain since last night and some light bleeding,” the pale young woman admitted. She screwed up her face and let out an agonizing wail.

“Why didn’t you say something last night? You don’t think you’re in labor, do you?” Julia asked. “The baby isn’t due for another month or so.”

“I don’t know, Mama Jules.” A wince crossed Erin face. “I never had a baby before.”

“I’m going to pull the car around to the front door. Brandon, help your wife up the stairs,” Douglas ordered. He looked apprehensively at Erin. “You can walk, can’t you?”

She nodded and gingerly maneuvered her massive body over to the edge of the bed.

Douglas said, “Jules, you and Brandon help her up the stairs. I’ll be in the front.” He looked at Erin again.
